Biomass - a little bit more

What is biomass?
Biomass is the burning of anything that was alive not so long ago that is used to produce energy.  It is a renewable energy source since we can always grow more plants.  A renewable energy source is one that can be continuously produced.  A non-renewable energy source is one that can not be continuously produced.
The Purpose of Biomass
The U.S. wants to be a strong country and it can't keep relying on the Middle East for petroleum.  We need to find a suitable energy source that the U.S. can produce to sustain itself.  Biomass is the perfect candidate.
Different Types of Biomass
What different types of things are burned to make energy?  Waste, waste is burned to make energy.    Fuel for biomass can be a variety of wastes including agricultural waste, animal waste, urban waste, and forest products and waste.
    The Process of Biomass
How does waste become electricity and heat for people's homes?  You can burn biomass in a waste-to-energy plant.  The burning of leftover waste heats water.  The heated water produces steam and the steam powers a turbine.  The turbine powers a generator and the generator produces electricity.  Congratulations!  You have just turned a bunch of waste into energy!
     Customers of Biomass
Who can use biomass?  Wood and other plants can be burned to create biomass, so if you live near plants and trees, then you can produce biomass.  Farmers can also use biomass.  Animal waste can be put into large tanks that decompose the biomass.  As the biomass decomposes, bio-gas is formed.  Bio-gas can be used to fuel homes and any leftover waste can be used as fertilizer for crops.
     Bio-diesel and Ethanol
Biomass can also be turned into a gas.  Bio-diesel and ethanol can be made from biomass.  Bio-diesel is cleaner than diesel and ethanol is cleaner than gasoline.
