The Many Advantages and the Few Disadvantages
The several advantages
1. Biomass is a renewable energy source because we can always grow more plants and then use them as fuel for biomass.
2. After biomass decays, it can be burned and used as fuel.
3. Biomass can also be turned into a gas. Bio-diesel and ethanol can be made from biomass. Bio-diesel is cleaner than diesel and ethanol is cleaner than gasoline.
4. Animal waste can be put into large tanks that decompose the biomass. As the biomass decomposes, bio-gas is formed. Bio-gas can be used to fuel homes and any leftover waste can be used as fertilizer for crops.
5. Biomass is a cleaner energy than coal and natural gas.
Three major disadvantages
1. "Biomass is difficult to store and transport because it decays." (The Need Project 2012) However, when biomass decays, it can still be burned and used as fuel.
2. "The amount of energy stored in biomass if less than the amount of energy stored in an equivalent weight of a fossil fuel." (The Need Project 2012) Although biomass does not store as much energy as fossil fuels, it is more environmentally friendly than fossil fuels. So, in the long run, it's better to use biomass because you don't want a polluted world.
3. "Burning biomass can produce odors and emissions." (The Need Project 2012) Even though biomass may produce harmful odors and emissions, these gases are not as detrimental as the emissions other energies release.
